A Legendary Korean Rom-Com Movie: My Sassy Girl

엽기적인 그녀 My Sassy Girl

A legendary Korean rom-com movie. Released in 2001, this movie became a standard for Korean romantic comedy movies. It might look a bit like a B-movie, but it surely made some big impact on the movie industry in Korea. There are even some critics saying that “Korean romantic comedy movies still haven’t escaped from My Sassy Girl’s influence.”

You’ll see what Seoul was like in the early 2000s. There are no platform screen doors in subway stations! Jeon Ji-hyun was a 20-year-old rookie who had just started her acting career and she became a rising star after this movie.

It’s about a man and a woman, in their early 20s, getting into all sorts of incidents. They are more than friends, but not lovers. It’s very complicated.

Three things that became popular after the release of the movie :

1. Wearing a school uniform in a night club

In the movie, these two go to a night club wearing their high school uniforms. They are showing their IDs at the gate. Literally everyone, with a little bit of exaggeration, was wearing their high school uniforms in the clubs after the movie was released.

2. Iconic movie line

So many people mimicked this part of the movie.

She’s saying,
“Hey Gyeonwoo, Do you hear me?
Hey Gyeonwoo, I’m sorry.
I guess I really can’t help it.
Hey Gyeonwoo, I’m sorry… I’m sorry.
I guess I really can’t help it.
I thought I’m different.
But I’m just a woman.
Hye Gyeonwoo, I’m sorry.”

3. The title song of the movie

“I believe” by Shin Seung-hoon.
